Data reuse guidance
How to reuse data in Uganda Christian University Digital Institutional Repository
The Uganda Christian University Digital Institutional Repository makes research datasets and related outputs easier to discover, cite, and reuse. When you reuse repository data, cite the dataset itself and check the rights statement or license before using it in your own work.
Data reuse
Datasets, software, code, methods, and supporting research materials should be treated as research outputs in their own right. Reusing data responsibly helps strengthen transparency, reproducibility, citation, and scholarly trust.
If you reuse data from the UCU repository or from any third-party source, cite the dataset itself in your research and in any publications, presentations, reports, or derivative outputs that arise from using it.
Discover
You can discover data and other repository outputs by browsing communities and collections or by searching by title, author, subject, date, faculty, department, type, or keyword.
Repository content is designed to be discoverable through the UCU repository search interface and through indexing services such as Google, Google Scholar, and dataset discovery tools where metadata is harvested successfully.
If you are depositing research data alongside a publication, include a data availability statement in the related article or report. This helps readers understand where the underlying data can be accessed, whether access is open, restricted, or under embargo, and how the dataset should be cited.
Reuse
Data in the UCU repository may be openly downloadable, temporarily embargoed, restricted, or available under specific access conditions. Always review the item page before downloading or reusing files.
Check the license or rights statement attached to the item. The rights information explains what you may do with the data, including whether you may copy, adapt, redistribute, analyse, quote, text-mine, or reuse it commercially.
Many open licenses allow reuse when the original creators are credited, but conditions vary. Some items may require attribution, non-commercial use only, no derivatives, share-alike terms, embargo observance, or direct permission from the rights holder.
Citing data
Citing data gives credit to the original creators, improves discoverability, and allows other researchers to understand the evidence behind your work. It also supports research integrity by making methods, sources, and conclusions easier to verify.
Cite datasets and software separately from associated articles. An article may describe a study, but the dataset is the reusable research output that another researcher needs to identify and access.
How to cite datasets in the UCU repository
Citation style may vary depending on the journal, publisher, supervisor, department, or referencing convention you are using. A complete dataset citation should normally include:
- author or creator name(s);
- publication or repository deposit date;
- dataset or software title;
- repository name, such as Uganda Christian University Digital Institutional Repository;
- persistent identifier, handle, DOI, or stable repository URL;
- version number, edition, or release date where applicable;
- license or rights statement where required by the citation style.
If the item page provides a citation panel or copy-citation option, use it as a starting point and adjust the format to match your required referencing style.
Responsible reuse checklist
- Read the item description, abstract, methodology notes, and file documentation before reuse.
- Check whether the data is complete, provisional, anonymised, restricted, or connected to a specific publication.
- Confirm the license, rights statement, embargo, and any ethical or access limits.
- Cite the dataset, software, or method directly, not only the related article.
- Keep enough detail in your own work for another researcher to find the exact dataset and version you reused.
